And now for something completely …the same. Monty Python alumnus Terry Gilliam is taking another crack at telling the story of Don Quixote.
Lost In La Mancha is all that remains of the ill-fated 2000 edition of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. It tells of Terry Gilliam’s first try at filming the Spanish windmill jouster, which ended in catastrophe.
Gilliam’s productions, though brilliant, frequently suffer from his tendency to ignore budgets and time restraints, bring on calamity and often to disappear into box office failures.
The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2000) was Gilliam’s first attempt at bringing the classic story to the cinema. The project quickly became “the movie that didn’t want to get made”, with flash floods, injuries to key cast members and the Spanish Air Force all intervening to end the shoot after just five days.
But Gilliam never lost hope for the project (insert “Impossible Dream” joke here) and has begun working to retool the script with Tony Grisoni, his writing partner from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Shooting on The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is expected to begin later this year.
