The Church in the Darkness is an action survival game about infiltrating a cult, and it just got its release date. After years of waiting, The Church in the Darkness is now slated for an Aug. 2 release date.
Originally announced in 2016 with an eerie teaser trailer, the game takes place in the late ’70s and follows a cult that has removed itself from a Vietnam War-obsessed America.
As outcasts from the U.S. government, the group has relocated to South America. You play as Vic, an ex-law enforcement officer who travels to South America to see how his nephew is doing in the cult. Players will survive from outside threats and make life-or-death decisions. As detailed by the game’s website and developer Paranoid Productions, The Church in the Darkness features open-ended environments complemented by tense, top-down gameplay.
Players can “play how they want” by choosing to approach encounters with stealth, non-lethal, and lethal takedowns. As Paranoid Productions warns, though, players must be prepared to live with the consequences of their actions.
Every playthrough offers unique gameplay scenarios and story elements, with different character personalities and a shifting narrative told through investigation and action. How dangerous are the Walkers? Who are your allies and enemies? How far will you go to uncover the truth and save these people?
Fans will recognize the voice talent of Portal’s Ellen McLain and Team Fortress 2’s John Patrick Lowrie as Rebecca and Isaac Walker, respectively. McLain and Lowrie are real-life husband and wife as well.
The Church in the Darkness launches in a few short weeks on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
