At the March 9 PlayStation State of Play, Square Enix shared an announcement trailer for strategy RPG The DioField Chronicle, which is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, and PC via Steam in 2022. More specifically, Square Enix has coined the term “real-time tactical battle” (RTTB) RPG to describe the game. You can pause gameplay to strategize when you need, but otherwise, the action will rage on like in a real-time strategy game. The game is being co-developed by Square Enix and Lancarse, who most recently worked on Monark.
Game of Thrones composers Ramin Djawadi and Brandon Campbell provided the soundtrack for the game. Taiki (Lord of Vermilion III, IV) provided character designs, and Isamu Kamikokuryo of Final Fantasy XII and XIII provided concept art.
The premise of The DioField Chronicle is that the “rise of warlike powers and modern magic” is threatening a peace that has existed in the Kingdom of Alletain for 200 years under the rule of the Shaytham dynasty. An “Empire” and an “Alliance” (very Star Wars) want access to the kingdom’s Jade, which is used as a raw material in magic. You will control a group of mercenaries called the Blue Fox, and it sounds like you will have a hand in determining the fate of the kingdom.
Stay tuned for a final release date in 2022 for this unique title. Square Enix had a big day today, between opening its music YouTube channel and announcing Valkyrie Elysium.
