Over in the west, E3 is the biggest gaming event of the year, but down in Japan, the homeland of Sony, Nintendo, and countless other gaming greats, Tokyo Game Show is the show to watch. The good news is that The Escapist is on-site at the show again this year, and even though the majority of the show is in Japanese we’re still aiming to bring you all the most important news, previews, interviews and of course, that sweet, sweet cosplay.
We will be updating this post with all of our coverage from the show, so be sure to check back here every day from September 15-18. If you have something in particular you’d like us to check out at the show, please let us know in the comments and we’ll try our best (though keep in mind by “we” I mean “just me” as I’m actually the only Escapist guy on-site).
For now, here’s what you can expect to see at the show.
What to Expect
First up, Nintendo makes a point of not attending Tokyo Game Show so don’t expect any NX reveals. However, given the company’s recent push to mobile, and the huge presence of mobile developers at TGS, we may hear some more about Super Mario Run.
Sony is at TGS in full-force every year. Expect to see a lot more of the PS4 Pro, PlayStation VR – which is due out very soon, and some highly-anticipated PS4 games like The Last Guardian, Nioh and of course Hideo Kojima’s bizarre Norman Reedus/fetus collaboration: Death Stranding.
Microsoft has attended TGS in the past, but due to abysmal sales in the region has elected to not attend this year.
Square Enix has one of the biggest booths at TGS, and with Final Fantasy XV just around the corner you can expect to see a lot of that. We may also get some more Kingdom Hearts news, both for the upcoming HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue and maybe, possibly for an actual proper sequel.
EA Games, despite being an American company, does have a big presence at TGS. We can no doubt expect a lot of Battlefield 1 stuff from them this year, and their regular sports-game stuff.
Capcom will no doubt be showing off Monster Hunter Stories, its upcoming Monster Hunter spin-off that features amiibo support.
Other than that, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is likely to appear, as is Dark Souls III‘s first major DLC release, Ashes of Ariandel.
Konami will also be at the show but does anyone really give a shit about Konami anymore?
