Microsoft’s Inside Xbox stream today revealed Bloober Team’s next terrifying project, The Medium. The studio, which is also responsible for other thriller games like Observer and Layers of Fear, says this Xbox Series X and PC title will be its “largest and most ambitious project to date.” Check out the game’s haunting trailer.
The Medium is dripping with inspiration from Silent Hill, with Bloober going as far as to recruit Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka to create one half of the game’s “dual score,” playing into the game’s two different realities. Yamaoka will work with the studio’s own composer, Arkadiusz Reikowski.
Players take on the role of Marianna, a person cursed with the ability to travel between both the spirit and real world. These people, known as mediums, are accompanied by terrible visions as they interact with the worlds they can travel between, offering up unique perspectives through psychological horror gameplay.
Bloober CEO Piotr Babieno provided a statement regarding the team’s vision when approaching The Medium: “Every one of our games has a central theme that drives its creative and technological design. In The Medium, we focus on perspective and perception. When you change your point of view, you discover that things are more complicated and nuanced than you initially thought. The Medium is our most ambitious game ever and we can’t wait to show you how we’re translating this vision into a psychological horror.”
Producer Jacek Zieba spoke after the reveal on the opportunities the Xbox Series X offers, saying previous generations often came off as “too weak” to fulfill Bloober’s visions; part of this means The Medium will have no loading screens and a steady frame rate.
The Medium launches for Xbox Series X and PC holiday 2020. No plans for a release on other platforms have been announced.
