The Tron Sequel Trailer Makes Me Happy

It’s new to me and it’s really cool so for the benefit of those who missed it, here’s a link to the hot-and-sexy TR2N trailer that’s sure to elicit spasms of gleeful anticipation.

The trailer actually premiered at the 2008 San Diego Comic Con, where by all reports (and to no-one’s surprise) it received a very positive reception. The video of the Tr2n trailer available to those of us who were unable to attend is, sadly, small, shaky and hard to hear. It’s also cool as hell.

Little is known about the sequel, but IMDB says that both Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner will return to the film. Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde are also starring, while John Hurt and Karl Urban are rumored to be involved. The site describes the plot as, “A virtual-world worker looks to take down the Master Control Program,” but details are non-existent. The movie is currently targeted for release in 2011.

And now, the obligatory history lesson. In 1982, Tron told the tale of humans who were “digitized” inside a vast computer network, where they struggled to survive against the Master Control Program and ultimately find their way back to the real world. The movie was built around cutting-edge visuals, and while it was only moderately successful at the box office it gained a dedicated cult following among the nerd chic. It also inspired numerous videogames, including an arcade stand-up from the same year and releases for the Intellivision and Atari 2600 home consoles. In 2003, the horribly underrated Tron 2.0 was released for the PC and Xbox, followed a year later by Tron 2.0 Killer App for the Gameboy Advance.
