THQ has signed a deal with Marvel Entertainment to develop new games based on the Marvel Super Hero Squad figurines.

THQ has been given exclusive rights to develop the games on all formats, according to a GamesIndustry report, with the first one slated for release in 2009. Marvel has deals with other publishers that cover other properties, including Sega, which holds the game development rights to The Hulk, Thor and Captain America, and Activision, responsible for the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games.

“Marvel is one of the true crown jewels in the entertainment industry and we are thrilled at the prospect of both building the Marvel Super Hero Squad brand and further developing our relationship with Marvel,” said THQ President and CEO Brian Farrell. “We are dedicated to expanding our unmatched success story in the kids space and this agreement with Marvel is an excellent complement to our portfolio.”

The Marvel Super Hero Squad is a series of two-inch figurines that debuted in 2007. Initially designed for kids, the toys have been a hit with adults as well and the line has branched out to include larger “multi-packs” of figures, vehicles and less well-known characters such as Kraven, The Absorbing Man and Fin Fang Foom. Marvel has also announced plans for an animated series based on the toys.
