Respawn Entertainment has discontinued new sales of Titanfall 1 starting today. The studio made the announcement on social media, stating that the multiplayer-only title will also exit gaming subscription services, such as Xbox Game Pass, starting March 1, 2022. Servers for Respawn’s debut project will remain online for the foreseeable future though, so there is still an opportunity for those who own a copy to hop in. Titanfall 1 being discontinued comes after news earlier this year that the studio only had “one or two” developers working on the franchise.
Titanfall launched on PC and Xbox back in 2014 as a so-called Call of Duty killer and has turned into an important IP for Respawn. A multiplatform sequel, Titanfall 2, may not have sold as well as the studio had hoped, but free-to-play battle royale title Apex Legends, which takes place in the same universe, has enjoyed massive popularity since launch in 2019. Though Respawn said no new Titanfall games were in development as of summer of last year, fans have continued to push for a new entry.
Nonetheless, Respawn has stated that Titanfall isn’t going anywhere: “Rest assured, Titanfall is core to Respawn’s DNA and this incredible universe will continue. Today in Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends, and in the future. This franchise is a north star for the caliber of experiences we will continue to create here at Respawn.”

Respawn’s words should come as reassurance for loyal fans, though it’s not entirely clear how the series will remain a “north star” going forward. One glimmer of hope can be found in the Nvidia GeForce Now leak from this past September, which included names of dozens of potential unannounced titles from a variety of publishers — including a Titanfall 3.
