Ubisoft has announced Tom Clancy’s XDefiant as a 6v6 free-to-play first-person arena shooter coming to PC and consoles.
Executive producer Mark Rubin and creative director Jason Schroeder describe Tom Clancy’s XDefiant as “fast-paced firefights meets punk rock mosh pit.” They aim to provide realistic gunplay, a standout cast of characters, and personalized classes, with players able to choose among four factions: Echelon, Outcasts, Cleaners, and Wolves. These groups have their own unique traits and abilities that will be essential for competitive play across the game’s familiar locations, with Ubisoft saying that the cast of Defiants will grow post-launch. See the reveal trailer below.
Tom Clancy’s XDefiant developer Ubisoft San Francisco explained more in a post-reveal interview. Rubin reiterated that realistic, grounded gameplay was paramount when creating the shooter. The studio is also committed to listening to player feedback while remaining transparent, adding, “We want this game to last for years.”
“We are not going to abandon it and go off and make another game after this one launches,” Rubin said. “We want to be dedicated to our community. We’ll make some mistakes, but we hope the community will trust us enough to know that we will always own up to those, and we will always work to fix them as fast as possible.”
Tom Clancy’s XDefiant has no release date, but you can head to the game’s website to sign up for the closed test that starts August 5.
