Ubisoft Taking its Time With Beyond Good and Evil 2

It’s been awhile since we last heard anything about Beyond Good and Evil, but Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot says that’s because it wants to make it as good as can be.

This time last year, word got out that work on Beyond Good and Evil 2 had stopped and the game had been put on hold. But according to Guillemot, that isn’t – and was never – true, and work continues unabated.

Guillemot says that developer Michel Ancel plans to come out with something very exciting, and hoped that people could be patient while he made the game “perfect.” The original Beyond Good and Evil wasn’t a strong seller when it was released in 2003, but become increasingly popular as the years went on. Guillemot said that he felt the game’s disappointing sales were because it was a little too ahead of its time.

As to why Ubisoft is making a sequel at all, Guillemot said that innovation was in the company’s DNA. He cited games like Rayman and Assassin’s Creed as titles that broke the mold, and said it was important to take risks from time to time. With the original Beyond Good and Evil having such a cult following, however, the risk involved in a sequel seems relatively low.
