The Uncharted franchise is known for its big, bombastic, over-the-top action set pieces, and as the second full movie trailer shows, this upcoming prequel is not going to be any different. The trailer starts off the same as the first, showing off Tom Holland as Nathan “Always Roll Sleeves” Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Victor “Sully” Sullivan, but by the end of it things get pretty outlandish.
Yup, it has flying, dueling pirate ships. It’s like the screenwriters accidentally put in a copy of Skies of Arcadia in the middle of getting inspiration by playing the Uncharted games. Look, the games never really believed in physics or logic all that much, sure, but this seems like a whole new level of jumping the shark, especially as the movie is acting as a prequel to said games. If the Uncharted movie is indeed telling the story of how the game’s Sully and Nathan met, then by the time the pair got to the plot of the first game, the action sequences should have felt like nothing compared to having a gunfight on two flying pirate ships. The second Uncharted movie trailer is something else.
Cynicism aside, the movie could turn out to be a bit of fun. Holland knows how to be charming and witty, and Ruben Fleischer is directing — so maybe he can pull another magic rabbit out of his hat as he did with Venom. The movie also stars Tati Gabrielle as Braddock, Sophia Ali as Chloe Frazer, and Antonio Banderas. With Sony and Holland riding high off the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, this could turn out to be yet another big franchise for both.
Uncharted will release in theaters on February 18, 2022.
