Publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Auroch Digital revealed Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun with a teaser trailer at today’s Skulls Showcase, showing off a retro Doom-like first-person shooter (FPS) take on the Warhammer franchise that is set to launch on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X | S sometime in 2023. The pixelated sprites and gnarly death animations make it look like it’s straight out of the ‘90s.
In the game, players take control of a highly mobile Space Marine as they rip (and tear) through the Chaos Space Marines and daemons of Chaos. Today’s teaser doesn’t reveal much, but there’s more than enough to get even non-Warhammer fans excited. Check out the Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun trailer below for a brief look at Doom-ish gameplay.
The Warhammer franchise is no stranger to experimentation when it comes to dipping its toes in new sub-genres. While previous spinoffs, such as Space Hulk: Deathwing and Necromunda: Hired Gun, have explored FPS gameplay before, it looks like Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun will provide a much more focused experience. In addition to those visual Doom influences, Auroch says players can expect an arsenal of weapons to learn and unload.
Stay tuned for a final release date for Boltgun as 2023 approaches.
