Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground Is an Incomplete Tactics Experience | Review in 3 Minutes

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground by Gasket Games is a turn-based-tactics rogue-lite based on the tabletop strategy game Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. You’re able to control three distinct factions in their own separate campaigns: the Stormcast Eternals, the Nighthaunt, and the Maggotkin of Nurgle.

Each faction receives a light story about doing their respective god’s bidding by claiming territory in their name, all told through enthusiastic voicework. Regular gameplay reveals few details about the history of the major players in each faction or the world at large, but lore cards can be collected from maps that will dive deeper on those subjects. I have never been a fan of Warhammer’s particular brand of hardcore fantasy and find its dialog and lore impenetrable, and Storm Ground’s over-the-top voice acting did nothing to change that.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground just doesn’t feel like a complete tactics experience. My guess is a lot of nuance may have been lost in the translation and automation of its tabletop counterpart, so if you’re a fan of that game eyeing this one, it may be wise to hold off. The game is out now for $39.99 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
