The original X-COM: UFO Defense was an incredibly compelling game, so it’s no wonder that studios are still trying to recreate its magic.
The latest attempt, UFO: Extraterrestrials, comes from Tri Synergy and went gold this week. The game will be available for digital download on May 1 through Matrix Games and via retail channels later in the month.
Unlike its spiritual predecessor, UFO: Extraterrestrials is set on another planet, Esperanza, in the year 2025. Like the X-COM games, however, it promises players real-time control over their global strategy and intense turn-based tactical combat. In addition to scientists, technicians, troops and air units, the player will also control light and heavy support combat vehicles and robots.
Will this be the game that finally scratches the X-COM itch, or will it leave us digging out our old CDs and installing DOSBox once again? The buzz has been positive so far, and we’ve only got a few weeks to wait. Here’s hoping!
